Sang Ik Kim

Sang Ik Kim, 91, of Northbrook, passed away on April 14, 2025, at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge from complications of a stroke. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 17, at Matz Mt. Prospect Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Rand Rd., Mt. Prospect, IL. Visitation is 5-7 PM with a Korean language service at 7 PM presided by Pastor Sun Sik Park of Vineyard Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at a later date. Sang was born on February 1, 1934, to Jung Ha and Inn Sook Kim. He was raised in Sun-Cheon in what is now part of North Korea, before his family relocated during the Korean conflict to Seoul and then Jeju, South Korea. He graduated from Yonsei Severance College of Medicine and was a pioneer coming to the US in 1961 to pursue a career in anesthesiology. Sang met then nursing student Magdalena Sook Eun in Chicago where they were married on June 12, 1965. He established himself in the pain clinic and lab at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago before spending most of his years in practice at St. Joseph’s Hospital until his retirement. Sang served as a Deacon at his church, Vineyard Presbyterian Church in Elmhurst. Sang was warm and kind above all. He had a calm, welcoming presence. He would give you all his attention as if you were the only one in the room. Even so, he was just as comfortable with a microphone in his hand in front of an audience cracking jokes and making everyone smile. He loved the Lord, his family, and his friends, and showed that love easily and unhesitatingly. Through words of encouragement, a laugh, or a simple nod of approval, he had a way of responding with just what you needed at that moment. While we will miss him dearly, his spirit and example will shine brightly in all of us. Sang is survived by his wife, Magdalena Sook; 3 children, Paul (Renée) of La Salle, Joseph (Kelli Landes) of Chicago, and Julie (Ryan) Richards of Mahwah, NJ; 7 grandchildren, Melanie (Michael), Joseph, Andrew, Darwin, Elijah, Maggie Richards, and Ryan Richards; and a brother Sang Chul of Seoul, S. Korea. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Sang Ho. Memorials may be directed to Vineyard Presbyterian Church, the family, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
