Robert Paul Krautstrunk

Robert Paul Krautstrunk, 97, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at Captain James A Lovell Federal Health Center. He was born on September 18, 1924 to Paul and Florence (Steinman) Krautstrunk. Robert was a proud Navy veteran who served in WWII. He was a submariner vet, and was on the crew of the USS Requin, which is now on display in Pittsburgh. Robert was very proud of his service, and served as the president of the Illinois branch of the WWII Submarine Veterans, and won the Illinois Veteran of the Month. He was married to his wife, Ruth Mathiesen, for 70 years before her passing in 2016. The two met at age five, and would often make faces at each other through the windows of their respective homes. The couple raised two children together, Kent and Gale. Robert loved his family very much, and enjoyed spending summers with them in Lake Mills, WI. After the passing of Ruth, Robert moved to Lake Barrington Woods, where he became very involved in the community. He started a Wii league called “Bob’s Bowling Babes,” and he started Pinochle and Poker Clubs. Every year, he took up a collection for the staff of Lake Barrington Woods and would give it to them for Christmas. Robert also shared his gift of generosity by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, PADS, and at various hospitals and food banks. He was also the owner of Cary’s Finer Foods in Cary, IL. In his free time, Robert also liked bowling and fishing, as well as rooting for BOTH Chicago baseball teams! He will be remembered for being a family man with a big heart, and will be missed by many. Robert is survived by his daughter, Gale (Robert) Burke; grandchildren, Joel Sill, Morgan Krautstrunk, Paul Krautstrunk, Stephanie (Brad) Kobylarz, Kelly (Derek) Suchor, and Alex (Consuelo) Krautstrunk; five great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews, Larry (Denise) Vana, Karen (Ted) Sherga, and Chuck (Tracey) Vana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; son, Kent; his sister, Virginia; and his parents. A Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at Matz Mt. Prospect Funeral Chapel, 410 E Rand Road, Mt. Prospect, from 12-4pm with a service at 4pm. Inurnment will be held privately.
