Marie Virant

Marie Virant, 81, of Mount Prospect, passed away December 8, 2022, at Emerald Place Memory Care in Glenview, surrounded by her loving family. Born May 31, 1941 in Avon Lake, OH. The daughter of Earl Hassel and Clara Huber. She graduated from Avon Lake High School, in 1959 and married Ed Virant in 1964 on the 8th of February. They started their family in Avon, Ohio, where they raised their children until 1979. As her husband’s work required them to relocated, she found work in accounting departments for many different businesses and at banks, embracing each new job as an opportunity to help support the family and find new friends. She lived in Glenview, Illinois; Tiffin, Ohio; Perrysburg, Ohio; Brookfield, Wisconsin, and then returned to the Chicagoland area (Mount Prospect) in 2010. As a devout catholic, Marie was always busy doing God’s work and helping others. She found ways to help at the parishes her family joined and was very involved in volunteering at her children’s schools from the time they were in kindergarten until they entered college. After retiring, she volunteered at the North Shore Hospital and was an active member of St. Thomas Becket Catholic Church, where she participated in the women’s group, the choir, and became a eucharistic minister delivering communion to the homebound and sick. She cherished her time with her family. She returned to Mount Prospect to be close to her grandchildren, where she cheered them on at countless games of Wilmette Park District soccer and attended most any other school activity, open for guests to attend. She hosted her grandchildren frequently and spent time with them baking or doing most anything they enjoyed. Even at a distance, she helped coordinate holiday reunions for her siblings and their families who lived in the Avon Lake area. She had a great love of cooking, baking, and gardening. She enjoyed professional and college sports, especially Cleveland’s teams the Guardians, Cavilers, and Cleveland Browns. After moving to Glenview in 1979, she became a Chicago sports fan, as well. Survivors include husband, Ed Virant; daughters, Elaine (Paul Farrell) Virant, Lisa Folk Elliott (Tucker Elliott); grandchildren, Cailey and Evan Farrell, Anita and Garrison Shubert and Clara Farrell; brothers, Dick, James, David and Mark Hassel and sisters, Connie Riedel, Kathy Urig and Marcia Hassel. She is predeceased by her parents, her sister, Alberta Hassel, and son, Alan Virant. Visitation Saturday, December 17, 2022, from 9 -10 a.m. at Matz Mt. Prospect Funeral Chapels, 410 E. Rand Rd, M Prospect, followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Emily Catholic Church, Saturday. 1400 E Central Rd, Mt Prospect, IL. Burial in All Saints Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Matz Mt.
