John K. Tunney. Beloved husband of Pam (nee Bernardini). Loving father of Michael, Kevin (fiancée Carolina), Margaret (fiancé DJ), and Kari Tunney. Devoted son of the late William and Ann Tunney. Dear brother of Bill, Ann Marie, Jeanie (Kris) McGrath, Ed (Diana), Kevin (Kathy), Tom, and Debbie (John) Hunt. Cherished son-in-law of the late Robert and Janice Bernardini. Brother-in-law of Patti Siers and Penny Lopuszanski. Uncle to Courtney (fiancé Kyle) Tunney, the late Meaghan Ochs, the late Grant Ochs, Colin (Casey) Ochs, Charlie (Allison) McGrath, Emily (Jim) Morrissey, Redmond McGrath, Daimhin McGrath, Erin Tunney, Ryan (Kristin) Tunney, Kaitlin (Steven) Koontz, Deirdre (Dan) Passarella, Meredith (Ryan) Kahn, Jay Buffington, Brigid (fiancé Vilmantas) Buffington, Bobby (Melissa) Siers, Billy Siers, Jimmy Siers, Joey Siers, Jana Lopuszanski, and Johnny Lopuszanski. Fond cousin, friend, godfather, coach, and colleague of many. John was born to William and Ann Tunney in August 1956. He was raised on the south side of Chicago, the seventh of eight children in an Irish Catholic family. After graduating from St. Thomas More and Brother Rice High School, he completed his education at Western Illinois University where he was a loyal Sigma Pi Brother to many. He held many positions over the years while working in the printing industry. John met his wife, Pam, and they married in 1984. They built a life together in Mount Prospect where they raised four loving children, Michael, Kevin, Maggie, and Kari. John was a fiercely devoted and proud father, always ensuring to show and vocalize his love for his family. He was also an involved member of the St. Emily community and neighborhood. Never a grudge to hold, John had countless friends and was always ready for a party. In an ode to his cherished Irish heritage, John and Pam hosted their legendary St. Patrick’s Day Party every year for more than 30 years, where family and friends gathered at their home for laughs, a pint of Guinness, and priceless memories. Always a sports fan, he held a particular love for the Chicago White Sox. After coaching his children’s sports teams for years, he continued to coach at St. Emily well after his children had graduated. John fought hard against cancer for more than six years and was blessed with excellent care through Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Despite medications, treatments, surgeries, and hospitalizations, he maintained his Irish sense of humor while embracing each day with a positive spirit, never losing his love for life. John passed away peacefully on June 20, 2023, surrounded by family. John held many titles in his life: son, brother, husband, father, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law, son-in-law, godfather, Sigma Pi Brother, friend, coach, and colleague. He was always ready for a good time, but even quicker to love, and truly embraced life and devoted himself to family and friends. He is remembered for his loving soul and giving heart. Memorial Visitation Friday, July 7th from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Matz Mt. Prospect Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Rand Rd. Mt Prospect. Funeral Service Saturday, July 8th at 10:00 am at St. Emily Church, 1400 E Central Rd. Mt Prospect. Family will host a luncheon on Saturday, July 8th following funeral service. John made his wishes well known that he wanted as many family and friends to attend the luncheon. The family requests all to join them at the luncheon for a true celebration and Irish sendoff.
