Stephen A. Balas

June 16, 1962 - February 22, 2022

Steve A. Balas, who grew up in Mt. Prospect, IL, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at the age of 59. Steve was born June 13, 1962, in Des Plaines, IL, the son of Daniel and Barbara Balas. Steve is the life partner of Montana Hayes. They have been together for 28 years. Loving Brother of Jim Balas, Donald (Crystal) Balas, Thomas (Kimberly) Balas, Laura VanDerStuyf, Michael (Maria) Balas and Kenny Balas. Dearest Uncle of Albert Posey, Amanda Clark, Timothy, Joseph, Eric, Anthony, Colette, Julia, Matthew and Zachary Balas, and Caeli and Paige VanDerStuyf. Fond Great Uncle of 10. Steve graduated from Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect, IL, and from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, and worked as a tax accountant.  He fondly enjoyed camp outings with his extended family at Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See in Manteno, IL, and camping and hiking all over the country with Montana and their dogs, Bear and Vance.  He will always be remembered for his excellent campfires!  Growing up, Steve was a competitive swimmer, lifeguard, swim coach, instructor, and pool manager.   Throughout his life, he was known for being an extremely kind and caring person, and a mentor for many.  His spiritual presence and unique ability to engage and relate to others on their level will be sorely missed. Visitation will be held Friday February 25, 2022, from 3:00-8:00 PM at the Matz Mt Prospect Funeral Chapel at 410 E. Rand Rd, Mt Prospect, IL. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday February 26, 2022, starting at the Chapel and proceeding to the St. Emily Catholic Church at 1400 E Central Rd, Mount Prospect, IL. The funeral Mass begins at 10:30 AM. Interment will be private at All Saints Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve’s name to either Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See in Manteno, IL, through their website (http://campshaw.org), or to a local animal shelter of your choice.
