Charles W. Giroux DDS, age 86. Beloved husband of the late Mary Giroux nee: Cawley. Loving father of June (Mark) Rzepczynski, Barbara-Ann (Mark) Gustaferro and Mary Carroll Sincic. Cherished grandfather of Mary, John, Mark, Joseph and Henry. Dear brother of George (Dorothy) Giroux, Kathleen (the late Richard) Zahn and Roger (Peggy) Giroux. Chuck grew up in Chicago on the 5000 block of N. Western Avenue in a three-flat occupied by his extended family. He was an altar server at St. Matthias (serving until he finished his schooling at age 25), a speed skater, a big brother to his three siblings, and a loving and obedient son. An excellent student at St. Matthias School and then at St. George’s High School in Evanston (class of 1953), Chuck enrolled at Loyola, the first of his family to attend college, and received his DDS from Loyola Dental School in 1960. It was at Loyola that Chuck met the dental school’s pretty nurse, Mary Cawley, whom he courted and then married in 1961. Chuck served in the United States Naval Reserve, and upon graduation from dental school, was commissioned as a lieutenant and stationed in Lafayette, Louisiana as dentist to the naval base. After completing his active service in 1962, Chuck, with Mary and their baby June, relocated to Des Plaines, where they would establish their home, join St. Stephen’s parish, and add Barb and Mary Carroll to the family. Chuck practiced dentistry in Des Plaines for more than 50 years, where his patients treasured him for his good humor, gentle manner, and sterling care. Chuck’s deep Catholic faith informed his every activity and expressed itself in his unfailing kindness, generous and forgiving spirit, and commitment to service. He supported the St. Stephen’s community in numerous roles over many decades, including Men’s Club member, lector, school board president, and finance committee chair. As a corollary to his faith, Chuck valued education above all else. He provided his daughters a Catholic education, including their degrees from Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College, at no small sacrifice to himself. He himself had a voracious appetite for learning, fed by three newspaper subscriptions and countless books. He took enormous pleasure in the fellowship of his many friends, including those from St. Stephen’s, the South Side Horseshoe League and the Spruce Street Athletic Club, Everett Avenue, and St. Matthias and St. George. He loved Notre Dame football Saturdays, golf on Sunday afternoons with his buddies, thin crust sausage pizza, the Cubs and the Bears, bookstore browsing and buying, movies with popcorn, and chocolate-covered cherries. Most of all he cherished his extended family, especially his grandchildren, in whom he delighted. Chuck will be remembered with lasting affection and respect for his wise and unassuming leadership; for the comfort and healing he provided in his dental care; for his exceptional kindness; for his dry and often silly wit; for his fine mind and embrace of new ideas; for his patient and calming presence; and for his unfailing desire to be of help to others. He will be profoundly missed. Family and Friends will gather, Saturday, January 15, 2022 at St. Stephen Protomartyr Catholic Church, 1280 E. Prospect Ave., Des Plaines, for Mass at 10:00 am.
